The Gant boat trip

The Gant boat trip

It was precisely with a boat trip that the history of Gant began. The main character is the Ukrainian Berl Gantmacher, who decided to go to the United States of America in search of the American dream. He arrived in New York on 12 November 1907. He was 17 years old.

Like many Jewish immigrants before him, Berl made his name more American and began to introduce himself as Bernard. He began working in textile factories during the day to pay for night classes at Columbia University. He studied pharmacy, but the future took care of keeping him in a shirt factory as a collar sewing foreman. It was there that he met his future wife, Rebecca.

After years of experience in the field, Bernard, Rebecca and a cousin decided to open their own dressmaking studio and manufacture shirts to sell to others. Subcontracted by brands such as Brooks Brothers, J. Press and Manhattan Shirts, the new Par-Ex Shirt Company produced comfortable and fashionable shirts. They always signed with an embroidered 'G' on the bottom corner of each shirt and customers began to associate the symbol with a quality product.

In 1927, they took the company to New Heaven, where they would establish Gant of New Heaven 22 years later, with their family already formed. In April 1949, after the couple's sons had returned from the war, Bernard did something different. The world had changed. New influences and types of art, music and fashion were spreading across America. With magazines and radio stations introducing a lifestyle that was previously unknown, the Gantmacher family realised that the demand for quality shirts was high, but they were all made to measure. No one was producing in quantity for the masses. That is exactly what Gant did.

The shirts were a success. They became associated with elitist ivy league style because of their fame on the Yale University campus. Gant made sure people never looked too dressy, but always being well dressed. A social and casual style that especially dominated and charmed American students.

In 1959, the company officially changed its name to Gant Shirtmakers, by which time it was already the world's second largest shirtmaker. Bernard lived his American dream and when he passed away, his sons took over the company. At least until 1967. Since it was sold that same year, Gant has changed ownership several times.

Gant

From the 1980s, Gant was taken over by the Swedish company Pyramid Sportswear which expanded the brand's product line. From shirts it moved to trousers, rugby shirts and ties. The American and European combination brought Gant a mixture of elegance and casualness. With time, it also began to produce knitwear, dresses, jackets and accessories. The footwear line only appeared with the turn of the millennium and that is the one we are particularly interested in.

At BZR-Street Style Culture you'll find only Gant shoes. The style follows the same casual, comfortable, elegant and sophisticated lines as the rest of the brand's products. Well known until today, the brand currently belongs to the group that owns Lacoste.

Gant footwear is effortlessly stylish. The materials used guarantee durability, quality and sustainability. At least, that's why the brand works with numerous sustainable companies such as Better Cotton Initiative, Water Aid and Leather Working Group, for example.

Gant

Bernard had a dream and he made it come true. He used to say that "if you don't know where you come from, you don't know where you're going either". So Gant follows the same ideology today, striving for a better world and believing that we never stop learning.
