Sunglasses and summer tones

Who hasn't stopped in front of a beautiful landscape for a few minutes, while taking off and putting on their sunglasses in front of their eyes to see the difference in colours? The change in hues caused by the lenses is often impressive. You may have even come across some photos on social media where you can see the landscape in normal shades and through the glasses.

The truth is that, despite the variety of lens colours and the possibility of using them as photo filters, sunglasses are an essential accessory, especially in summer. As well as protecting our eyes from ultraviolet rays, sunglasses help in brighter situations. However, there is a third reason why we love them so much: they add style to any outfit.

The colours are varied, as well as the designs and brands, not to mention the brands. Today we bring you sunglasses from Vans, Dotdash and Von Zipper to talk about this year's trends. We have models from the most elegant, like the oval and the cat eye, to the most daring, like the oversize and steampunk.

Let's start with the classics. The aviator style and the cateye - which gets its name from the resemblance to a cat's eyes - have been part of the trends for a few years now. They are a safe bet for those who want to invest in glasses that never go out of fashion. In addition, they are models that do not go unnoticed. On one hand, the aviator model has more masculine and strong traces; on the other hand the cat eye model evokes femininity and boldness.

Easy to combine with any type of face, there are several types of cat eyes. You can find more retro and slim shapes or more classic and square shapes. The 50s-inspired model exists in neutral colours for more timeless styles, in vibrant colours for the more creative and with a turtle pattern for the more traditional and elegant.

Dotdash is one of the brands that has this model available. Part of the Boardriders group, like Quiksilver, Element and DC Shoes, Dotdash is focused on producing low-cost sunglasses. Created in 2013, the brand was Von Zipper's first venture into a non-premium market. It emerged to bring quality, stylish eyewear to the consumer who doesn't want to spend too much and would rather, perhaps, buy two or more pairs for the price of a pair of Von Zipper. Dotdash wants to be more than a brand, a symbol of a quiet life, as is characteristic of surfing and skateboarding, sports with which it is associated.

Besides the cat eye models we have already mentioned, we also have glasses with transparent frames. One of this season's great trends, transparency gives a bold look to all models. They are ideal for those who like delicacy and discretion in the way they dress. They exist in various colours, various degrees of transparency and even in other formats, such as square or oval. Vans is the brand that most bets on this trend. Usually associated with footwear or clothing, the brand founded in 1966 also explores the world of accessories with bags, hats and sunglasses.

Continuing with the trends for 2021, let's now talk about this season's bet on models with corners and edges. The square and rectangular formats, composed of straighter lines, transmit maturity, strength and superiority. Sometimes they are narrower, sometimes more square, sometimes smaller and sometimes oversized. The truth is that the rectangular shape is full of personality and the slimmer it is, the more retro it looks. The model is available in various colours and sizes, and the more robust and oversized ones are also very fashionable.

Despite the strong presence of coloured frames this season, especially white, the turtle pattern is back. With a more modern aesthetic, the pattern this year mixes several shades and is present in more models, as in square and round.

Sunglasses with curved lines tend to invoke delicacy, softness and femininity. However, the more retro models can be very daring. They are nothing new and will never go out of fashion. Round or oval glasses are easy to combine and transport any look to a reality where everyone is happy and relaxed. For the most daring we have a Von Zipper model inspired by the steampunk style. The Empire sunglasses are futuristic, with a mini side shield and more rounded temples. This is the style of glasses used in more alternative festivals such as Burning Man and Coachella, in the United States of America.

Also from America, more precisely from California, comes Von Zipper. Founded in 2000, the brand manufactures premium sunglasses and snow glasses. It was born to fill gaps in the world of surfing and snowboarding and now produces accessories with personality for those with an alternative mentality. Von Zipper belongs to the Boardriders group, just like Dotdash, after Billabong -the company that had acquired Von Zipper a year after its creation- was bought by the group in 2018.

Last, but not least, we bring you the models with slim frames. Although there are many mass frames, the metal options are very welcome. With a more current and casual style, the slim frames can be found in various formats, such as the aviator, the round and the square. Depending on the model you choose, you can make your look more daring and irreverent or more professional and mature.

Shapes aside, it is important to mention that not all sunglasses are suitable for all situations. For example, if you want to convey an idea of strength and maturity, perhaps the more bold colours are not so suitable. Rather go for a more classic shade, such as black, or softer, lighter colours that convey a sense of calm.

When it comes to choosing your new sunglasses, the ideal thing is to think about your style, the aesthetics you want to transmit, your lifestyle and the characteristics of your face. According to our research, if you have an oval face, you can bet on any model. If you have a rounder face, the perfect frames are those that are more angular or rectangular. On the other hand, if you have a more triangular face, thin frames or those with a more oval lower part are ideal. If, on the other hand, you have a square face, rounded models are the right choice because they will soften your features and create balance.

At the end of the day, there are no rules and you can even have several sunglasses in several models. You decide what is best for you and how you like to look. But one thing is for sure, this summer there are three things you can't miss: mask, hand sanitizer and at least one of our sunglasses.
