Graphics and self-expression

Graphics and self-expression

Every season is packed with trends and this season we've already seen tie-dye, bucket hat and the current models of sunglasses and swimsuits. However, so that you can look your best this summer, we've yet to talk about graphics and prints.

After being locked indoors because of the pandemic, this year the big fashion houses have bet on materials and designs that convey joy, lightness and hope. And if there are fabrics that are dynamic, they are the ones with graphics.

Before we begin, let's understand the difference between graphics, patterns and printing. Graphics refers to the use of words in clothing designs, be they brand logos, inspirational phrases or funny expressions. Patterns, in turn, are geometric figures or images that are repeated several times on the same fabric. Thirdly we have printing which, unlike the others, refers to the technique used to engrave on clothes. In the course of this post we will consider the three definitions as a single trend, not least because on a visual level, they are all powerful and lead us to where we want to go.

This trend is for those who are not afraid to stand out in the crowd, and there are various degrees of graphics. Some are stronger and others are simpler. In general, in this season's BZR collection you'll find a big bet of logomania. By this we mean that many brands have bet on graphics with their name and logo. Good examples are Deus Ex Machina, Levis, Champion, Element, Santa Cruz and Dickies.

The shirts with floral and animal patterns are also very present on the street styled of the season. The Santa Cruz Sunflower T-shirt is perfect to highlight a more neutral look, for example. Despite being often present in the annual trends, the prints had moments of fame in 2013 and 2018. They were considered essential pieces in any wardrobe. And just like in nature, nothing is lost and everything is transformed. Thus, the trend is back with a retro and fresh design.

Apart from the pandemic, the last year and a half has brought up many important issues, which deserve to be heard and should be talked about. From there to the emergence of T-shirts that show how we feel or what we think was a small step. More than style, nowadays fashion is seen as a way of personal expression. Whether through colours or graphics, T-shirts are no longer just T-shirts. The Nike Sportswear t-shirt and the Adidas Treffy Recycles t-shirt are examples of this, combining phrases with dynamic lettering and logos with an important message like recycling.

So far we've talked about t-shirts, but graphics, patterns and prints are everywhere, from accessories, to trousers and shorts. In fact, they are techniques that can be applied to any fabric. Sometimes they are simple and sweet, with words lettered in different colours. Sometimes they are powerful or random, with holographic patterns.

When it comes to combining a piece with pattern or graphics there are several tricks. The easiest is to choose combinations that converse with the pattern. This may mean plain pieces that have a colour of the pattern, or it may not even be the same colour, but one that matches it. You can also make a bolder choice and go for a total look in the same pattern. The important thing is that you feel good and that there is harmony in the outfit.

Now fill your wardrobe with this unisex trend and have fun creating looks. Oh, and don't forget to share them with us at @bzrstreetstyle.
