Outdoor style for indoors and outdoors

Within the fashion world there are many terms that sometimes confuse us a bit. Street style, athleisure, beachwear, outdoor, boho, oversized... all terms that we need to understand if we want to keep up with the latest news. Some are easy to understand by their translation, others need a brief explanation.

As we are a shop with a street style culture, we are always aware of the trends that are appearing on the streets. In recent years, there has been a big presence of athleisure and outdoor style. So, in this post we will explain what they are, demystifying these words that seem either complicated or opposites in relation to the fashion world.

The athleisure trend peaked with the pandemic. The style, which consists of wearing gym clothes outside of that context, was transported into our homes, almost without invitation. Furthermore, due to its comfort, athleisure is now seen as perfect for travelling. Thanks to it, leggings and biker shorts have become an integral part of our outfits.

Combining street style with sportswear gave way to functionality in fashion, paving the way for the leap that took place this year. The athleisure style has become normalised, giving way to a new practical style: the outdoors. As the name suggests, this trend brings the clothes and accessories that are normally associated with outdoor sports, such as hiking and climbing, to street style.

This is not a new style. Quite the contrary. In Japan, it was already quite common to combine more fashionable outfits with more functional and conscious options. Besides, the encouragement of outdoor activities boosted this aesthetic choice to a great extent. However, this trend only came to us more recently, with cities like New York and London accepting a more relaxed dress code.

In fact, it was in 2018 that Balenciaga started introducing this concept. Soon after, other brands followed suit, making unlikely conjugations such as parts of a windbreaker with a fluttery white dress. Brands not so relevant so far gained fame and reached a different audience than the usual. Birkenstocks, Patagonia, Doc Marten, Barbour and The North Face are some of them, the last one having created a collection in collaboration with Gucci.

This increased interest in outdoor style goes hand in hand with a growing concern for the environment and more sustainable products. Brands like Patagonia, The North Face and Element are three examples where these two universes, which at first seemed so distant, meet.  Functionality, durability, utility and practicality on one side is now fused with the aesthetic and popular on the other.

Intertwined with the sustainable is also the desire to switch off screens and reconnect with nature. After almost two years of being locked indoors, consumers are looking for a more offline lifestyle. Nowadays, it is considered a luxury to have time to disconnect and go out to meet nature. When it's impossible to go, the outdoor style remains as a reminder of what those moments could be, bringing us closer to that reality.

The concept of being outdoors is often confused with the practice of sport. However, it goes beyond that. Light and comfortable clothes are appealing for day-to-day situations, for walks near the beach or to discover the various walkways we have scattered around the country. You don't want to run the risk of finding wonderful places and not looking your best for the photo you'll later share on social media.

It can happen that athleisure is confused with outdoor style, because exercising outdoors is often done with clothes that were designed for the gym. However, the characteristic outdoor pieces are more functional and sustainable. In the first instance we have the undisputed wool jumper, which was used to keep mountaineers warm on the coldest days, mountain shoes, whether boots or trainers, and windbreakers, which are often waterproof.

Apart from the obvious pieces, there are others that complement this style. In terms of accessories, we have the fanny packs, only this time they are worn on the shoulder. On the other hand, we have the bucket hat, associated with fishing and the outdoors. In terms of footwear comes the unusual pair of sandals and socks. Here, the Teva shines as the sandals that you want to have on an adventure through nature. Finally, there is also the puffer jacket. Due to its light weight, warmth and easy storage, this jacket is one of the most popular in the outdoor world. Consequently, it is also now an outdoor style favourite thanks to brands such as Gucci and The North Face.

As with other styles, the trick is to mix pieces you feel comfortable and confident in. As there are no barriers, create your own style and go for the influences you most identify with. On our site you'll find everything you need, from more functional and sustainable clothing, like Patagonia, to specific collections designed to celebrate nature, like Element x Peanuts.
