Fjällräven: Backpacks and the little fox

We don't know what your level of Swedish is, but you probably don't know that Fjällräven means mountain fox. The little animal was chosen to represent the outdoor gear company, both on a name and logo level. Founded by Ake Nordin in 1960, the brand was born out of Nordin's dissatisfaction with the backpacking market.

At the age of 14, Nordin decided to make his own backpack after realising that all those he could find were uncomfortable. Using his mother's Singer sewing machine, he made a cotton specimen. He attached the backpack to a wooden frame with leather straps and thus made the weight distribution more even. The rucksack attracted a lot of attention and after his service in the Swedish armed forces, Nordin opened Fjällräven.

With a Nordic design, Fjällräven began by producing backpacks for outdoor activities and soon also sold clothing and accessories. However, the brand is still best known for its backpacks, the most popular of which is the Kanken.

At BZR-Street Style Culture you will find several Kanken models. Created in 1978, these backpacks were designed to solve a problem. According to a Swedish study, in the late 70's, 80% of the Swedish population suffered from back problems. This became an even more worrying fact when this problem started to affect the younger population. Thus, Nordin decided to create a backpack that would provide good support for the younger ones to carry to school, solving the problem of posture. Thus, the Kanken was born.

He used two A4 covers as a reference and created a light and spacious backpack with a rectangular shape. It was an immediate success. Over time, the model evolved and today there is the normal Kanken, the Mini, the Re-Wool, the Re-Kanken, the Sling, the 15', the Nº2 and the Greenland. The backpack is made with water-repellent and durable Vinylon F fabric. It has a spacious compartment with a large opening, two side pockets and a front zippered pocket.

Did you know that Kanken means to carry?

With proven quality, Fjällräven cares about creating products that perform well, last a long time and are environmentally friendly. Since 2008, Kanken production offers climate compensation, thus balancing the emissions produced by the brand.

Simply put, most Kanken are similar in design and shape. The normal size is ideal for teenagers and adults. The Mini was designed for children. It is, therefore, the same as the normal one, but in a smaller size. The Re-Kanken, in turn, is made of recycled polyester extracted from plastic bottles. Likewise, as the name suggests, Re-Wool is a special edition of Kanken made with recycled wool.

KankenGreenland is a version made in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the launch of Fjällräven's first jacket, with the brand's G-1000 HeavyDuty Eco fabric. It is more resistant and with recycled polyester. The Kanken 15', on the other hand, is the model adapted for taking your laptop with you to school. It is suitable for carrying any computer up to 15 inches. Finally, the Nº2 is an improved version of the original backpack. The main differences are the leather straps and logo, giving a classic touch to the model, and the fabric, which is more water resistant.

In general, the Kanken are very functional, durable and reliable. In addition, their simple design allows them to be combined with any outfit. Fjällräven wants to inspire you to get out into nature and enjoy your surroundings. Check out our website and discover all the models we have available. The choice is yours.
