Tie-dye, the festival trend

Tie-dye, the festival trend

It was with hippie culture that tie-dye emerged. It's been on the rise several times over the past five decades and now it's back. In 2019 it appeared shyly, in 2020 it did not go unnoticed and in 2021 it's everywhere.

The tie-dye has invaded social media in quarantine time. Celebrities and influencers from all over the world elected coloured clothes as their form of choice to brighten up the sad days ahead.  The aim: to reconnect with nature, with sustainability and with authenticity. This is because, if you want, you can give new life to pieces you have at home with the tie-dye technique - it's called upcycling - experts say that everything that brings renewal, fun and good energy will have more space in our lives in this post-confinement period. They call it the aesthetics of joy.

Colour is closely associated with joy and, indeed, that is what is not lacking in tie-dye. The expression coming from English literally means to tie and dye. Simply put, tie-dyeing is a dyeing process where you roll or tie up pieces of fabric and apply various colours to them. It is when you stretch them out again that you can see the patterns formed by the dyes. As it is a random and unique method, if you decide to do it at home, we assure you that no two pieces will be the same.

With no rules, it was in the 60s and 70s that tie-dye was first trending. The hippie movement adopted the age-old Asian technique known as 'shibori' in Japan and as 'bandhani' in India. They used clothing as a form of protest, advocating freedom, relaxation, youth, peace and love.Musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin often performed in tie-dye clothes during music festivals.  Dormant for a decade, the trend returned in the 1990s with clubber style, the movement that introduced electronic music and, later, rave music. Today, tie-dye has already walked the runways of spring/summer 2021 collections in New York, London, Milan and Paris.

Today there are few brands that haven't embraced tie-dye. We scoured our website and we found clothes, shoes and accessories with this pattern in the brands Levis, Karl Kani, Vans, Champion, Crocs, Havaianas, Herschel, Nike and New Era. With bolder, softer colours or in black and white, there are tie-dye pieces and patterns for all tastes.

Dress with personality

Talking about the tie-dye trend is easy, but understanding how to wear it can be a challenge. So, we've put together some tips that we think might help you. Due to the variety of colours, the tie-dye pattern is very versatile and adapts to all styles, from the simplest to the most elegant.

If you have a causal style, more street-wear orientated, you can combine an oversized t-shirt or shirt with some biker shorts and platforms. Do you have a casual but not so sporty style? Try pairing that shirt with some Levis jeans and sneakers, for example. Depending on the model of trousers you choose, you'll always get a different and casual look.

However, you are someone who prefers a more elegant style. How about taking our previous suggestion and changing the sneakers for a more classic shoe or a pair of high heels? If you add a blazer, the outfit will look even more professional. You can also combine your coloured shirts or shirts with classic trousers. The trick is to go for neutral colours like black, beige and white. The classic trousers will balance with the casualness of the tie-dye, resulting in a creative, cheerful and versatile look.

You still haven't decided if you like this trend, but would like to give it a go? The solution for you is to go for the accessories. Start by adding colour to your style through details. Hats, socks, bags, headbands or shoes. There's plenty to choose from. You can also look for a more discreet tie-dye, in pastel shades or with just one colour variation, which will make it easier to put your look together. On the contrary, if you like to take risks, you can mix tie-dye with other patterns. The mixture of prints is also one of this season's fashion trends.

Although these tips seemed more geared towards the female audience, the truth is that they also apply for men. Adding a tie-dye t-shirt to some denim shorts is a guaranteed recipe for success for hot days.

Tie-dye is for people with a strong, independent and stylish personality. Embrace this trend and create original outfits. Oh, and don't forget to share them with us on our instagram!
