Stan Smith, iconic and now sustainable

When in 1978 the Adidas Stan Smith became famous at the feet of the tennis player with the same name, there was still little concern about the environment. Now more sustainable through the use of Primegreen technology, the Adidas Stan Smith are back.

The most recent model of the Adidas Stan Smith looks similar. The design is the same. The colors are equal. The style is classic. What changes is the material with which it is made. The Primegreen technology is a series of high-performance recycled materials, which launches the brand closer to its goal of ending plastic waste. After applying the technology to t-shirts and sweatshirts, now it’s time to use it on the brand’s most famous sneakers. Especially because Adidas Original wants to use only recycled polyester until 2024.

The new Stan Smith has a sole made from rubber waste. As for the top, 50% is made with recycled materials, without virgin polyester, and, of course, without missing the Stan Smith logo combined with the three perforated stripes on the tongue and the heel.

Some people think I'm a shoe!

We’re sure you already knew Stan Smith sneakers and you are most likely to know someone who has atleast one pair. But do you know what the story behind these famous sneakers is?

In the 60’s, in order to solve the excess of sweat in the shoes of tennis players, the son of the founder of Adidas Original decided to take a pair of leather sneakers and make holes into the side. But the success was not immediate. First, the sneakers passed through the feet of the French tennis player Robert Haillet, having been released under the name Adidas Robert Haillet. Haillet’s career was short and it was in 1978 with Stan Smith, the number one tennis player at the time, that the sneakers got famous.

The sneakers were manufactured for years, but it was only in 2014 that they became Adidas’s best-selling model ever, with 44 million pairs sold. They started on the tennis court and became a fashion icon, just like Stan Smith became a legend in the sports world. With numerous titles, the tennis player launched in 2018 an autobiography with the title ‘Some people think I’m a shoe’.

Stan Smith has already put his racket to rest, but the sneakers remain on the “court”. You can find the new Stan Smith in several colors on the BZR website. Choose the ones you like best and share them with us @bzr.streetstyle.
