Like instant cameras, vinyl records have made a comeback in popularity in the last decade. With a fleeting history, vinyl records as we know them today were invented in the mid-1950s. Around 20 years later, in 1980, cassettes appeared and gradually dethroned them. The final blow came ten years later with the CD boom.

Considered by many as obsolete, and only collected by enthusiasts, it was in 2010 that vinyl started to arouse curiosity once again. Since then, interest has been steadily increasing. Last year, and for the first time in over 30 years, vinyl record sales overtook CD sales, at a time when streaming represents 80% of the industry.

But that doesn't deter artists who increasingly often record on vinyl and/or re-release albums in that format. As for the record players, the brands' bet points to a vintage aesthetic. Beyond the basic use of the device, it is also seen as a piece of contemporary decoration. However, don't let the antique look fool you. Technology companies like Crosley have been making players with ever-increasing power and excellent audio performance.

Today we bring you a highlight of four vinyl albums that tell the story of four different women: Beyoncé, Rosalía, Alicia Keys and Rihanna. Powerful, talented and with an enviable career.

It was in October 2020 that Beyoncé released a special vinyl version of her 2018 Coachella concert: Homecoming. The album consists of 40 songs, split between four discs. Homecoming came out in conjunction with a Netflix documentary of the same name, where you can see the concert, as well as the entire creative process behind it. The performance, highly praised by all, was the first by a black woman as the headliner of the American festival. In Homecoming, Beyoncé highlights her roots, her past, her present and her future, having turned her performance into a cultural movement.

Rosalía, from a younger generation, released in 2018 her second album called El Mal Querer, a conceptual and experimental record. Inspired by electronica, flamenco and the idea of a toxic relationship, Rosalía reinvented herself, having won two Latin grammys with this record.

Thirdly we have an album that was originally released in 2007. Ten years later, the vinyl version appeared. We are talking about Good Girl Gone Bad by Rihanna, the singer's third studio album. The album, which is no longer unknown to anyone, is a mix of pop, R&B and dance pop. It was Rihanna's turning point, with songs like Umbrella, Don't Stop the Music and Shut Up and Drive, and it sold over seven million copies worldwide.

Last but not least we have Alicia Keys with her album Alicia. Explicit Physical. Released in September 2020, after being delayed three times because of the pandemic, the album is packed with partnerships. Well received by critics, Alicia. Explicit Physical draws inspiration from the singer's previous work. With bases of R&B, funk, soul, folk, raggae, among others, the album fuses styles, creating a music without genre, where a particular atmosphere is evoked instead of a singular sound.

More could be said about these albums, but we invite you to explore and discover for yourself. If you don't have vinyl records yet, join this new trend. You'll find everything you need here.
