Strike a pose

Strike a pose

Madonna said it already at the beginning of her famous song Vogue in 1990 and we say it now: "strike a pose". As you know photography has a very prominent place these days so we bring you the second part of our posing guide so you can strike a pose on social media. After we've talked about the importance of movement in creating dynamic images, it's with the creation of triangles that we begin today.

Whether you're still or moving, it's always dynamic to use your legs or arms - or both - to create triangle shapes. These lines make the image more appealing and the pose more elegant. This is because compositionally, our eyes are drawn to geometric shapes. It also helps with the dilemma of what to do with your arms and hands.

Since you don't need to take all your photos standing up, try sitting or squatting. These are poses that make your shoes stand out more, but can also be very delicate. You can sit on the edge of a pavement with a beautiful landscape behind you or on a staircase where you are the main focus. These are more intimate options with more personality. However, sitting poses don't end there. Quite the opposite. You can sit with your back to the camera and put your arms in the air. You can sit diagonally looking at the landscape. You can sit and put your elbows on your knees. These are just a few examples. Go where your creativity takes you.

Now to the point: what should we do with our hands? I'm sure you've had the experience of taking photos and not knowing what to do with them. Should I put them in my pockets? Do I hide them behind my back? Well, you have several options. The easiest is to point somewhere as if you were saying "look at that over there! You don't want your arms to look flabby and lifeless, so you can also cover up the sun with your hand, flick your hair or tuck in your clothes. Using props like hats, flowers, books, coffee cups and sunglasses is great for occupying your hands.

Also, another option is to put your hand in front of the lens, as if you're trying to cover it up, creating depth in the image. By doing this, you're making a photo with more layers and interest. You can also do it with your foot, for example, if you are sitting on a higher wall, or even with objects that you may have around you, like flowers, trees or even hammocks, like in one of the images we show you above.

Since we're talking about dynamic images, one of the last tips we give you is about using the architecture that surrounds you as a source of inspiration. If you notice that where you are there is a predominant form, try to imitate it. For example, you are in a park next to a tree that is slightly leaning. Why not lean over like the tree? Also, you can and should interact with your surroundings. Lean against the wall, sit on the windows or on the railings, climb on a bench...

Now that we have given you many tips on poses that you can put into practice, let's talk a bit about other important aspects. Obviously the scenery is fundamental for a good photo. However, don't be fooled into thinking that you can only get a good shot if you're in a beautiful place. Take a good look at your surroundings and you are sure to find something you like. That place may be uninteresting and not suitable for a full body photo, but it may be good for a half body photo because one of the walls has a beautiful colour.

Another aspect to take into account is the lighting of the photo. The ideal is to use natural light. The easiest thing is not to stand with your back to the light and pay attention to the shadows that form on your face. Light around sunrise and sunset creates softer shadows, while at lunchtime you have stronger shadows. Last but not least is the outfit. Wear clothes you feel confident in. The way you feel will show in every picture. At the end of this post you can find all the products that our models wore during this shoot.

With all these tips, you are ready to test and improve your poses. If you still don't feel comfortable in front of the camera, don't worry. You just have to keep practicing. Try out various angles, various poses and various expressions. With time you'll work out what works for you and you'll be a knockout in your photo productions.
