Heritage and nostalgia, the Herschel legacy

Heritage and nostalgia, the Herschel legacy

For many, classes start next week and if you don't already have everything you need, hurry up. So that you have all the information you need, we have made a back to school special where we show you all the backpack brands you need to know. Eastpak, Fjällräven and Doughnut were the first and now it's Herschel's turn.

Normally we do a little introduction to the brand first, but today we get straight to the point. We leave the story for the final part of this post, partly because we know we're already on the clock. There is no time to lose.

At BZR- Street Style Culture you'll be able to find a set of backpacks, wallets and fanny packs from Herschel. Since we're talking about back to school, today we're only going to focus on the backpacks. At the moment, we have five different models available. The most urban and street style oriented is the Dawson Small. With two small front pockets, this backpack is relaxed and closes with a drawstring and a snap, despite the old school look of the leather straps. It has an external zip near the back that allows you to access the compartment to store your tablet. This backpack is the small version of the Dawson model.

Herschel Nova Little America

The Classic XL is the novelty of the year. As the name suggests, this model is a larger version of the Herschel classic. Its bottom corners are rounded and the top is arched. With a small hidden zip pocket, the Classic XL has a compartment for your laptop and another for your mobile phone in the main pocket. In addition, it has a side pocket for storing your water bottle. The simple silhouette suits all styles. You will find this model in black, blue, camel, pink and army green. If you liked the Classic, but you are looking for a smaller backpack, there is also the Classic Mini with a floral pattern and full of colour.

Still within the Classic XL design you also have the Nova Small. Both are very similar, except for the Nova's thin, double handle. It may seem irrelevant, but this detail gives the backpack a new life, since it can be worn on the shoulder or held in the hand. In addition, the small front pocket has the zip visible unlike the Classic. This backpack was thought for the weekends. You will find it in two shades of pink and in the same pattern as the Classic Mini.

There are only two models left to mention: the Little America and the Retreat. They are both very similar, but the few differences they have completely change the backpacks. The Little America is the brand's most famous model. With a small front pocket, which closes with two springs, the Little America backpack has no zips. Like most of Herschel's backpacks, it also has a compartment for your computer. Available in regular size and Mid version, the Little America is available in colours such as camel, camouflage, green, blue, black, tie dye and brick.

The Retreat backpack, on the other hand, is the same as the Little America except for the size and the front pocket. The Retreat has a smaller pocket and no zip. This backpack is available in three colours: camel, army green and black. These two models remind us of the adventurous explorers seen in films, leaving us dreaming of the discoveries we can make with them on our backs.

In common, all Herschel backpacks have the interior fabric with red and white stripes, which has a label with the sentence "Welcome to Herschel". The choice of this fabric is linked to the history of the brand and the clothing of the overalls of the mill engineers in the village of Herschel.

A small village that changed the life of a small family

The Herschel story began even before the founders were born. Confused? We explain. In the early 20th century, a Scottish couple decided to go in search of a better life in Canada. Peter and Anni ended up in a small village called Herschel in Saskatchewan. There they decided to raise their family, from which eventually brothers Cormack, Lyndon and Jamie were born.

Herschel Retreat Nova

It was the two brothers who founded Herschel Supply Co. in 2009, when they realised there was room to invest in a backpack segment and decided to take the plunge. Lyndon handles sales and marketing, after years of experience working at Vans, and Jamie is in charge of production and design. They are a well-oiled machine based in Vancouver.

From the outset, the brand was a success. Between 2010 and 2011, sales increased by 900% and the following year by 350%. The secret to the success seems to be the nostalgic narrative behind the products. Herschel is an homage to the community of the founders' great-grandparents, bringing the mythology of small village authenticity into the design of the backpacks. They modernise nostalgic products with the use of buckles and flaps, giving consumers a sense of homesickness they didn't know they had.

The ideal of travel, the potential to leave and the antique look attract many consumers. Especially designed for 18-35 year olds who are digitally active and always on the go, the Herschel is a true icon of hipster culture. Find out which model is right for you on our website and head off on the adventure of starting a new school year. Go, it's your choice!
